Guernica gilt als ein – eventuell als das Bild, das die Wirksamkeit von Kunst als Statement gegen den Krieg auslotet, als historisches Epistem, das, so wie es nun existiert (a priori), die Bedeutsamkeit von Diskursen, in diesem Fall von Kunst, markiert. Dies wird gesprächsweise auch häufig in Bezug auf ihre völlige Unwirksamkeit gedeutet, wenn ihr, falls sie sich politisch äußert, nicht außerdem noch naive Lächerlichkeit und Unnötigkeit attestiert wird, angesichts des Einbruchs des „Realen....“ Von dem erstaunlicherweise behauptet wird, dass es sich auf Seiten des Kriegs befindet. Dabei ist es genau umgekehrt und die Kunst eine der belastbaren Verankerungen des Denkens in der Wirklichkeit, oder jedenfalls eine Erinnerung an eine Welt, die in der selben Sprache spricht wie man selbst.
