This talk intends to explore ways in which alienation and marginality are translated in film through the construction of the gaze and the space, not only at the level of the content or "reality" portrayed, but also in terms of the problematic of the image itself, its appropriation and its relation to strategies of empowerment. With particular reference to French films such as "Sans Toit ni Loi" (Agnès Varda), "La Haine" (Mathieu Kassowitz), "Les Amants du Pont Neuf" (Leos Carax) the presentation will look at ways in which some directors attempt to tackle the problem of power and objectification by refusing, for instance, to present a coherent, unified, all-revealing image....
