Albrecht Dürer was not plagued by the same incessant curiosity to expose the inner form of the organs as Leonardo, for whom the form itself was already an organ and, moreover, organic. Leonardo, however, loved to draw near to objects of his curiosity, even to enter into them. He was fascinated by what he called the “inner side” of the human skull: the eye sockets, with their cryptic “depths”; “all visible holes,” as well as the less visible ones, like those channels he believed carried tears directly from the heart to the eyes....
Paul Richer, dispassionate laboratory head and anatomist at the Parisian Salpetrière hospital - and also a sculptor and professor at the Parisian art academy - conceived of the skull as a “box” that accommodates our brain, the seat of our thought. Whereas Aristotele still saw the heart as the site of our thought, it was only later that such importance was attributed to the mind, whose interior was long invisible and therefore also unimaginable for us, much like a mysterious box, whose secrets need to aired and whose dark corners need to be surveyed. To open this Pandora’s box - to set free all the beautiful evils and the whole restlessness of thought that circles around its own destiny, its own secrets, its own place (as the French philosopher Didi-Huberman puts it) - is a question that has never ceased to inspire artists.
“Aîtres”, Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art’s summer exhibition at the gallery in the Salzburg Residenz and in the sculpture garden at the Ignaz-Rieder-Kai 9, brings together works from classics of modernism, such as Antoni Tapies, whose “Crane renverse” was exhibited as the key work in his retrospective at the Musée Picasso in Antibes, with the Austrian artists Bertram Hasenauer and Alfred Haberpointner, who have both recently enjoyed successes in the international museum-world. With “Amativity,” a sculpture crafted of corten steel, Jaume Plensa interprets Franz Gall’s phrenology, which sought to locate certain character traits in particular areas of the brain. Tony Cragg’s solitary, large-scale sculpture “It is, it isn´t,” fashioned from unique Finnish glue-laminated wood normally used in luxury yacht construction, ranks among the museum-quality objects. These also include the Belgian artist Jan Fabre’s seven sculptural treatises on the “symbiosis of physicality and spirituality,” made from pristine, white Carrara marble and emblazoned with vanitas symbols common since the Baroque.
