Working predominantly in film and video, Almond's practice encompasses sculpture, installation, performance and photography. He creates minimal yet emotionally charged works focusing on objects, places and situations that meditate on time, space and human experience. Influenced by the tension between stillness and transition in 17th century paintings of Jan Vermeer, Almond frequently exposes and intensifies our experience of place as in the works Night and Day, a series of moonlit mountain scenes that project an intensely eerie sense of frozen time; and Oswiecim, March 1997, a profound exploration of time lived in the wake of the historical trauma in the town once known as Auschwitz......
Almond has had solo shows at Tate Britain, London; De Appel Centre for Contemporary Art, Amsterdam; Kunsthalle Zurich, Zurich; The Approach, London; Chisenhale Gallery, London; Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin; The Renaissance Society, Chicago; Matthew Marks Gallery, New York; and Whitecube, London. His recent group shows include Apocalypse, Royal Academy, London; the Berlin Biennale, Berlin; and Geographies, Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris. His work is held in the public collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Almond's live video link work, HMP Pentonville for the ICA, was the winning project for the Toshiba Art & Innovation Commission, London, in 1997. The artist is represented by Jay Jopling/White Cube, London; Matthew Marks Gallery, New York; Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin; and Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris.
