Art Critics Award
Since 2007, in collaboration with the artist Moussa Kone, basis wien has awarded at one and a half year intervals the Art Critics Award for art criticism in Austria. The focus is on the awarding of prize money to an art critic who has distinguished his or herself through outstanding achievement in his or her field. In addition, a Junior Art Critics Award is also given to a not yet published critic. The jury consists of a panel of visual artists.

At one and a half year intervals and during a period of three to six months, we collect and archive German-language exhibition reviews with relevance to the production and reception of Austrian art. Included in consideration are texts on individual and group exhibitions of contemporary visual art in Austrian art galleries, museums and off spaces. The list of observed media can be viewed at the ACA-website under “Participation” (“Teilnahme”).
Basis wien collects the texts in the course of its own independent media observation and presents them in anonymous form to the jury.
The Junior Art Critics Award is open to all authors that have not yet been published, or published only rarely or in media that are difficult to access. The assignment for the prize is to write an exhibition review of not more than 3,500 characters for a fictional German-language art magazine. Applicants can opt for exhibitions in several Austrian cities (see www.artcriticsaward.com). The Prize is endowed with € 1,000 and includes the publication of a review in various magazines.
