Jean Arp and Jozef Jarema. The X-Value

Wir möchten Sie sehr herzlich zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung „The X-Value“ in unserer Wiener Galerie einladen, in der Werke des polnischen Malers Józef Jarema und des deutsch-französischen Künstlers Jean Arp zueinander in Bezug gesetzt werden.

Der Kosmopolit Józef Jarema, 1900 in Stary Sambor (damals Galizien/Österreich, heute Ukraine) geboren und 1974 in München gestorben, und der Elsässer Jean Arp, 1886 in Straßburg geboren und 1966 in Basel gestorben, trafen zu Lebzeiten immer wieder aufeinander: Beide stellten zusammen aus, beide organisierten länderübergreifende Künstlerkollaborationen, beide verfassten neben ihrer künstlerischen Tätigkeit literarische Werke, und beide fühlten sich der Suche nach einer universell-abstrahierenden Bildsprache in Abwendung von selbst erlittenem, konkretem Gräuel zweier Weltkriege verpflichtet....

Jaremas und Arps Verbindung geht in erster Linie auf den „Art Club“ zurück, eine Vereinigung von Intellektuellen, die Jarema 1945 zusammen mit dem Futuristen Enrico Prampolini in Rom gründete. Erklärtes Ziel des „Art Clubs“ war es, Avantgarde-Künstler aus aller Welt zu vernetzen und eine multinationale Kunstplattform zu schaffen. Schon nach wenigen Jahren unterhielt die Vereinigung in über 30 Ländern Niederlassungen, die aktivsten davon in Österreich, Belgien, Brasilien, Israel, Japan, Ägypten und der Türkei.

Über 200 Ausstellungen organisierte der „Art Club“ in den 1940er und 1950er Jahren, mehr als 150 Publikationen brachte er heraus. Gezeigt wurden Werke von Künstlern, die vor allem der abstrakten, konstruktivistischen, amorphen Malerei und Bildhauerei zuzurechnen sind, allen voran Jean Arp, Sonia Delaunay, Willi Baumeister, Max Bill, Giorgio de Chirico, Roberto Maguelli, Constantin Brâncu?i und Lucio Fontana.

Nach eigenem Bekunden gehörte Jaremas größte Bewunderung in dieser Zeit seinem Kollegen Jean Arp, der damals bereits Weltruhm genoss. Bei ihm erkannte er eine „unvergleichliche Meisterschaft im Umgang mit dem dadaistischen Prinzip des Zufalls“. In seinen eigenen Malereien greift Jarema folglich Arps naturalistisch geprägte, aber in die Abstraktion strebende Formensprache auf, in mehreren Gruppenausstellungen des „Art Clubs“ präsentieren sie zusammen ihre Werke.

Ende der 1950er Jahre verlieren sich Arp und Jarema aus den Augen. Jarema zieht zuerst nach Nizza, später nach München, wo er 1974 stirbt – acht Jahre nach Arp. In der Ausstellung „The X-Value“ finden die Werke von Jean Arp und Józef Jarema erstmals seit fast 70 Jahren wieder zusammen. Bewusst wird das Hauptgewicht auf Jarema gelegt, dessen Schaffen eine Wiederentdeckung verdient. Die Arbeiten seines Vorbilds Arp sollen dabei zur Einordnung sowie als Referenz- und Kontrapunkte dienen.

We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition The X-Value in our Vienna gallery, which sets works by the Polish painter Józef Jarema and the German-French artist Jean Arp in relation to one another.

The cosmopolitan Józef Jarema, born in 1900 in Stary Sambor (then Austrian Galicia, today Ukraine) and died in 1974 in Munich, and the Alsatian Jean Arp, born in 1886 in Strasbourg and died in 1966 in Basel, met repeatedly during their lifetime. Both exhibited together, both organized transnational artist collaborations, both wrote literary works alongside their artistic activities, and both felt committed to the search for a universal-abstract visual language in turning away from self-suffered, concrete horrors of two World Wars.

Jarema and Arp's connection goes back to the Art Club, an association of intellectuals that Jarema founded in Rome in 1945 together with the Futurist Enrico Prampolini. The declared aim of the Art Club was to connect avant-garde artists from all over the world and to create a multinational art platform. After just a few years, the association had branches in over 30 countries, the most active of which were in Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Israel, Japan, Egypt, and Turkey.

The Art Club organized over 200 exhibitions in the 1940s and 1950s and produced more than 150 publications. On display were works by artists who were primarily abstract, constructivist, amorphous painters and sculptors, including Jean Arp, Sonia Delaunay, Willi Baumeister, Max Bill, Giorgio de Chirico, Roberto Maguelli, Constantin Brâncu?i, and Lucio Fontana.

By his own admission, Jarema’s greatest admiration at this time belonged to his colleague Jean Arp, who was already enjoying worldwide renown at the time. He recognized in him an “incomparable mastery in dealing with the Dadaist principle of chance.” In his own paintings, Jarema consequently took up Arp’s naturalistically influenced formal language, but one that strove toward abstraction; in several group exhibitions of the Art Club they presented their works together.

At the end of the 1950s, Arp and Jarema lost touch with each other. Jarema moved first to Nice and later to Munich, where he died in 1974 — eight years after Arp. In the exhibition The X-Value the works of Jean Arp and Józef Jarema come together again for the first time in almost 70 years. The emphasis is deliberately placed on Jarema, whose work deserves to be rediscovered. The works of his role model Arp serve to classify it, as well as act as a reference and counterpoint.
