TRONIES wurden schon in der Malerei des 15./16. Jahrhunderts auffallend virtuos gemalt, groteske Charaktere darstellend, die der Frühgeschichte der Psychologie angehören. Leonardo da Vincis Studie von zwei wütenden Soldatenköpfen inspirierte in der Folge van Dyck, Rembrandt, Rubens, Brouwer, Vermeer. TRONIES wurden in den Niederlanden sogar zu einer eigenen, sehr beliebten Gattung - weil billiger gehandelt und dadurch viele Sammler anziehend.

TRONIES loten das Spektrum menschlicher Physiognomie und Gefühlsäußerung aus: oft auch Halbfiguren, deren Gesichter ebenso realistisch wie ausdrucksstark dargestellt sind.... Sie sind nicht nur als Porträts gedacht, oder gar als Auftragswerke, sondern vielmehr als Studien des Ausdrucks, des Typs, der Physiognomie: ein alter Mann, eine alte Frau, eine junge Frau, ein Soldat, eine Hirtin, ein Bauer, eine Orientalin, ein Künstler etc.

TRONIES, also known as "character heads“, explore the spectrum of human physiognomy and expression of emotions: often also half figures, whose faces are portrayed as realistically as they are expressively strong.

In the past, TRONIES were characterized by a particularly virtuoso use of artistic means and reflected characterological ideas that belong to the early history of psychology. These works are not intended as portraits but as studies of expression, type, physiognomy or an interesting character such as an old man or woman, a young woman, the soldier, the shepherdess, the oriental, or an artist etc.
