Die Rezeptiongeschichte von Werken der Concept- oder Minimal Art, u. a. jene von Sol le Witt, oszilliert zwischen rationalistischen und irrationalistischen Deutungsversuchen.

Kuspith spricht vom „Look of Thought“ und dem „Streben nach Intelligibilität mit mathematischen Mitteln“. Rosalind Krauss hält eine irrationalistische Leseweise dagegen und beschreibt le Witt's Produktionsweise wie folgt: „Die Ideen, die er immer verwendet, sind von einer subversiven Art, sie wenden sich an die Zwecklosigkeit des Zwecks, an die laufenden Räderwerke einer vom Verstand abgetrennten Maschine....“ Eine Synthese dieses Diskurses liefert Sabeth Buchmann mit ihrem Ansatz von Ökonomie und Protosubjektivität.

In Möglichkeiten gedacht würden jene Interpretationen die Entscheidung des eigentlich vorhandenen Kunstwerkes in seiner Form, Materialität und Farbe nicht legitimieren. Der Spielraum von Bedeutungszuschreibung und Produktion und der Sprache darüber, erweitert das was zu erwarten ist.

Works of art labeled Conceptual or Minimal, among them those of Sol leWitt, have received readings which can be seen as alternating between two antipodes: the rational and the non-rational.Kuspith’s „Look of Thought“ and „pursuit of intelligibility by mathematical means“ can be contrasted with Rosalind Krauss’ irrational reading, characterizing leWitt’s method as follows: „The kind of idea he inevitably uses is subversive, addressing itself to the purposeless-ness of purpose, to the spinning gears of a machine disconnected from reason“ A kind of synthesis compromising both sides of this discourse can be found in Sabeth Buchmann’s introduction of the aspects of economy and proto-subjectivity.

Conceived as potentialities, these interpretations cannot account for the actual artwork present, its form, materiality or colour. The field opening between the ascription of meaning, poduction and language expands the scope of what is to be expected.
