What are the Politics of Material Agentiality

In this workshop, we will explore the emancipatory, transgressive, utopian potential of material agentiality: What exactly can an artwork’s material dimensions do, which dynamics can they set off, and what structures can they move in an encounter with a human beholder? How are the radically open futurities – that many authors of the recent ‘material turn’ suggest as its prime potential – to be thought together with the tenaciousness of normativities and social structures of inequality? We are especially interested in tracing these dynamics for film and video (installations) that make their own (and their subjects’) historicity perceptible with obsolete technologies and media formats....

With Andy Birtwistle (Canterbury Christ Church University) Henrike Naumann (Artist, Berlin) Laura U. Marks (Simon Fraser University, Vancouver), Alex Stockburger (Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna) and Kristina Pia Hofer, Eva Kernbauer and Marietta Kesting (all University of Applied Arts Vienna).

Dieser Workshop fragt nach dem emanzipatorischen, transgressiven und utopischen Potential, sowie der Agentialität des Materiellen: Worin genau bestehen die materiellen Dimensionen von Film- und Videoinstallationen, und welche Dynamiken können sie anstoßen? In welchem Verhältnis steht das affektive Sich-Einlassen auf Materialität und Textur gegenüber den Politiken der Repräsentation? Wie kann die im ‘Material Turn’ anklingende Zukünftigkeit und radikale Offenheit des Materiellen gleichzeitig mit der ebenso beharrlichen Normativität und den sozialen Strukturen der Ungleichheit gedacht werden, welche die visuelle und sonische Kultur immer noch wesentlich prägen? Und welche Rolle kommt hier der eigenen Historizität der Medien selbst zu? Der Workshop widmet sich Filmen, Videos und Installationen, die diese Spannungen über den Einsatz von obsoleten Technologien und Medienformaten erfahrbar machen.
