An der Ausstellung nehmen siebzehn Künstler_Innen aus Serbien, Kroatien, dem Kosovo, Österreich, Spanien, Russland, Ukraine, Slowakei, Rumänien und den USA teil, die in Kollektiven, Plattformen oder individuell die persönlichen Erfahrungen artikulieren und in Übereinstimmung mit ihren eigenen künstlerischen Praktiken, die neukreierte Werke, die sich mit dem Thema der Balkanisierung auseinandersetzen darstellen.

Balkanisierung ist ein geopolitischer Begriff, der sich meistens auf den Balkan bezieht und mit der Auflösung Jugoslawiens in den 90ern assoziiert wird, respektive und im weiteren Sinne mit der Teilung eines Multinationalen Landes in kleinere, ethnisch homogenische Einheiten verstanden werden kann.... Da die Grenzen dieses Konzeptes nicht klar definiert ist und normalerweise für bestimmte Zwecke hineingenzogen wird, die meist auf die persönliche Einstellung der Person der den Begriff benutzt. Ähnliches passiert wenn man den Begriff Balkan definiert, der auf einer imaginären geografischen Kartierung basiert. Die äußerst bekannte Formulierung des Balkans als das Unbewusste Europas, kann in Analogie mit der revolutionären Einstellungen der avantgardistischen Bewegung des Zenitismus zusammengebracht werden, in der der Balkan, als die neue Kraft die Europäische Kultur regenerieren soll, betrachtet wird. Die Balkanisierung Europas, laut Ljubomir Micic, bedeutet die kulturale Emanzipation von Europa durch das Akzeptieren der neuen Werten des wiedererweckten Barbarogenies. Der aktuelle Kontext, der einmal wieder den Balkan in das Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit der europäischen Politik bringt ist die Balkanroute, die Flüchtlinge als Weg in das westliche Europa nehmen. Die Flüchtlingskrise führt zur Destabilisierung der Europäischen Union, als auch die geteilten Meinungen der Mitgliedsstaaten und als Resultat wurden die Grenzen gezogen und eine neue Art des Nationalismus konstruiert.

Mit ungewöhnlichen Zugängen zu dem Thema, tendieren die Künstler_Innen verschiedene Aspekte der Bedeutung, dieses provokativen Begriffes zu spannen. Mit der Einbringung der aktuellen sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und politischen Perspektiven durch das Prisma der Migration, das Thema der Identität und den Rollen der Machtverhältnisse, spielen die Künstler_Innen mit einer Prise Humor mit den nationalen Symbolen, um die kreuzenden kulturalen Vorurteile und Stereotypen kritisch zu untersuchen.

The exhibition of seventeen participating artists from Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo, Austria, Spain, Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia, Romania and the United States who in collectives, platforms or individually, articulating the personal experience in accordance with their own artistic practice, present newly created works on the theme of Balkanization.

Balkanization is a geopolitical term that most commonly relates to the Balkans and associates with the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 90s, and is respectively, in a broader sense understood as a division of the multinational country into smaller, ethnically homogenous entities. As the boundaries of the concept are not clearly defined, they are withdrawn for certain purposes, referring to the attitude of the one who acts on that behalf. The similar happens with defining the Balkans, which is based on an imaginary geographic mapping. The well-known formulation of the Balkans as the Unconscious of Europe can be brought into analogy with the revolutionary attitudes of the avant-garde movement Zenithism, where the Balkans is considered the new force that will regenerate European culture. Balkanization of Europe, according to Ljubomir Micic, means the cultural emancipation of Europe by accepting the new values of the awakened Barbarogenius. The current context which once more places the Balkans in the center of attention of European policy regards the Balkan route which refugees use on their way to the Western Europe. The refugee crisis leads to destabilization of the European Union, as well as the divided attitudes of its member countries, and as the result the borders are raised and a new kind of nationalism constructed.

Unconventionally approaching the theme, artists tend to span different aspects of the meaning of this provocative concept. Introducing the current social, economic and political perspectives through the prism of migration, identity issue and the role of power relations, the artists play about national symbols in order to, with a dose of humor, critically examine the cross-cultural prejudices and stereotypes.
