Tonto begann erstmals 1994 als no-budget-kassetten-label mit releases von curd duca, fleischpost, liebenau, ISN, plazma, kaplan. 1998 wurde das Konzept nach längerer Pause unter neuen Voraussetzungen wieder aufgenommen. Dieser 2.Anlauf entstand aus "Call", einem Projekt von Edda Strobl, in Zuge dessen Helmut Kaplan mit der Arbeit an einer CD beauftragt wurde.
