AbdouMaliq Simone

AbdouMaliq Simone presently holds joint academic appointments at the Graduate Program in International Affairs, New School University, New York and the Institute of Social and Economic Research, University of Witwatersrand. He has taught at the University of Khartoum, University of Ghana, University of the Western Cape, and the City University of New York, and has worked for several African NGOs and regional institutions, including CODESRIA (Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements.... He has been the recipient of Rockefeller and Ford Foundation visiting fellowships at New York, Columbia and Yale universities. Key publications include In Whose Image?: Political Islam and Urban Practices in Sudan (1994), ”Urban Social Fields in Africa”, Social Text, 56, 1998, ”Straddling the Divides: Remaking Associational Life in the Informal African City”, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research 25,1, 2001, and the forthcoming book, For the City Yet to Come: Changing Urban Life in Africa.
