Information

The basis wien Archive and Documentation Centre holds a unique collection of artists’ materials, publications, documents relating to art and its reception, and various other information carriers produced within the field of contemporary visual art in Austria.

The collection focuses on so-called ephemera: materials published in the context of contemporary art, such as exhibition invitations, floor plans, lists of works or texts, which usually serve as a medium of information for only a short time.
Since its foundation in 1997, the institution’s core activities have centred on collecting and cataloguing materials, as well as addressing questions of archiving and documentation relating to exhibitions, performances, artworks, documentary records, and artists’ estates.
The database, which has been launched in 1999, is directly linked to other archives and their digital repositories through European-art.net. In recent years, it has also increasingly been used to catalogue collections held externally, as well as to document artists’ estates digitally.

Catalogued objects are understood as traces of past exhibitions, biographical and/or institutional practices, and their reception. The collections can be located through the online database and searched through numerous levels of interlinking.
