A Happening with a Text by Andrew Wagner
Gabriele Rothemann (*1960 in Offenbach am Main, Germany) studied photography beginning in 1981 at the Art Academy in Kassel, and in 1985 continued her studies at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf under Professor Fritz Schwegler. In 1987, she received the title of Meisterschülerin.
In addition to receiving various awards and scholarships, two experiences were of particular significance: a year of study with John Baldessari and Michael Asher at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles (DAAD scholarship, 1988/1989), and a year at the German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome (1996/1997).
Her large-format photographs and watercolor drawings often reference an image archive that Gabriele Rothemann has been compiling since 1984, made up of press and magazine images that are formally and thematically striking. Her works are condensed versions or transformations of images from the collective memory.
Her artworks are held in numerous collections both in Germany and internationally.
After teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts and the Bauhaus University in Weimar, she was appointed in 2001 to the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where she founded the Photography class in the Fine Arts Department.
Andrew Wagner (*New Jersey) is a writer, filmmaker, artist, and amateur translator currently living in Berlin. His works and texts have been presented at, among others, Kunstverein Nuremberg; Grotto, Berlin; Medium P, Berlin; Portikus, Frankfurt am Main; FUTURA Center for Contemporary Art, Prague; Cripta 747, Turin; and Yeah Maybe, Minneapolis.
