Description

It is always a challenge to present the work of two artists together, and the question is even more complex when it comes to artists whose work is as multifarious as that of István Nádler (Visegrád, Hungary, 1938) and Eric Kressnig (Klagenfurt, Austria, 1973). Both Nádler and Kressnig work with various media (sculpture, installation, graphic art, etc.), which are often interrelated, even though the language of painting is fundamental to understanding the totality of their work. The painterly character of a work of art can easily be perceived – even if the medium is not painting – and in the works of these two artists one encounters aspects such as the exquisiteness of the colour palette, the variety of supports or the different textures, which reveal their creator as a painter.

István Nádler mentioned the concept of “emotional geometry” in an interview with Hans Ulrich Obrist, where the tension between rational and intuitive approaches comes into focus. His compositions feature geometric forms such as the square, diagonal line, and spiral, symbolizing existence, the passage of time, and transformation. Eric Kressnig builds on the traditions of geometry, yet introduces emotional registers through the use of materials like wood, plexiglass, or polished steel. These materials also raise questions about proportion, where the human body’s ratios serve as inspiration.

Both artists employ a radical compositional discipline and a minimalist visual language: “gesture, line, monochrome surface.” Their works simultaneously reflect systematic precision and a relatable emotional depth. The curatorial concept by Pia Jardí and Júlia N. Mészáros highlights how their creations, through the language of geometry, convey profound intellectual and human experiences alike.
